II Timothy 3.16-17
Sermon Notes
Two things about all Scripture:1. It is inspired by God - literally “God-breathed”
We believe that every word in the original manuscripts of the Bible was inspired by God and was without error. Therefore the Bible is our supreme and final authority for faith and practice (DBC Statement of Faith).
______________
The single Greek word theopneustos would be literally translated “God-breathed” and indicates not that Scripture itself nor its human authors were breathed into by God, but that Scripture was breathed or breathed-out by God (John Stott).
Scripture originated in God’s mind and was communicated by God’s mouth by God’s breathe or by God’s Spirit. It is therefore rightly termed “the Word of God”, for God spoke it (John Stott).
______________
Inspiration is God’s intending of human authors so that using their own individual personalities they composed and recorded without error His revelation to man in the words of the original autographs (Charles C. Ryrie).
2. It is profitable for everything in life.
a. For salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (15)
b. For creed and conduct (16)
- for teaching (positive)
- for reproof (negative)
- for correction (negative)
- for training in righteousness (positive)
Summary:
So that the man of God may be
• adequate
• equipped
• for every good work (17)
Questions for thought:
1. What authority does the Word of God hold for you in your life?
2. What presence does the Word of God have in your life?
3. What consistent practices do you have to learn and live the Word of God in your life?
4. Would others see what the value of the Word of God is for me by observing my relationship with the Word in any given period of time?
