How it All Began
Many of us are aware that Labor Day is a national holiday brought about to honor the hard working individuals in these United States. But, how many of us know how it all began and how long ago it happened?
In 1882, an Irish-American cabinet maker named Peter McGuire was, at that time head of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners in Detroit MI. Being described as a red-headed, fiery and eloquent speaker, he shared this idea on May 18, 1882 at the Central Union meeting. "Let us have a festive day during which a parade through the streets of the city would permit public tribute to American Industry."
In September of that same year, 10,000 workers showed up to march, in spite of the warnings from their employers. Since most employers at the time were very much against organized labor, very few employees were actually allowed to take the day off. In fact, most workers were threatened with their jobs if they chose to march in the parade. Nonetheless, 10,000 brave souls took the risk and marched in unity for their cause. The workers in the parade were led by mounted police and a band playing, 'Killarney.' Thus began the journey of what was to become a national holiday.
In 1887, Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey were the first states to recognize and celebrate Labor Day as a state holiday. However, it was not until June 28th, twelve years later in 1894, that President Grover Cleveland begrudgingly signed the bill allowing the first Monday of every September to be a national holiday called Labor Day. He definitely was not an advocate of organized labor, and fought long and hard against the bill until he was forced, under social pressure, to sign the bill.
Since the first parade 125 years ago, much has changed in how Labor Day is celebrated. In the northern part of the United States, Labor Day is also known as the official end of summer, with Memorial Day in May as the official beginning. Most of us will spend a great deal of time outdoors picnicking, boating, camping, swimming, or however else we choose, just to soak up the last of the rays of our summer sun.
Wherever, or however we celebrate Labor this year, most of us need to be reminded (me included) of how and why Labor Day got started. If it weren't for the efforts of Patrick McGuire and those that followed we maybe would not have the privileges of vacation pay, overtime, sick leave, or even safety in the work place.

Wednesday Night Adult Ministry
Fall 2010
These are exciting days, the Rangers are in first place, the NFL football season is about to kick off, and most importantly our Wednesday night ministry is about to launch. I want to encourage you to prayerfully consider participating in our Wednesday adult ministry.
This fall we’re offering a “Marriage Matters” class led by Billy Grammer. Billy has a Masters of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and a Masters in Counseling from Grace Theological Seminary in Warsaw, Indiana and is currently pursuing his certification as a Certified Sexual Therapist through the Institute for Sexual Wholeness in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be a ten week class for married couples of 1, 5, 10, 30 plus years. It will be a great time of encouragement, prayer, and fellowship. The class will cost $100 per couple; this is for the weekly material you’ll receive. No matter where you are in marriage, this class is for you, Jennifer and I look forward to participating and seeing you there. You can register by calling the church office 972.770.3500 or sign up at the welcome desk in the foyer of the church.
In addition to “Marriage Matters” there will be a “Crown Financial” study held in the library. The Group Study is a 10-week in-depth study of what scripture teaches about money and possessions. Graduates have confirmed that marriages are being strengthened and individuals are finding their way out of debt. They are also becoming consistent savers, generous givers and prudent consumers. Most importantly, people are entering into a closer relationship with Jesus Christ as they learn to apply His Word. Groups meet for two hours every week, and sessions include scripture memorization and interactive discussions.
Requirements for Participation: There are four requirements for students participating in this study: 1. Daily prayer for each member of your group 2. Memorize one assigned scripture each week 3. Complete weekly homework assignments—both Bible study and practical application (approximately two hours of homework per week) 4. Attend a minimum of 8 of the 10 classes .
Learn more: For more information about the next scheduled session, contact Frank Fuller at 972.490.3051 or email him.

Women's Ministry Tablescapes Luncheon

We are down to the final weeks to sign up for the annual Women's Ministry Kick Off Luncheon which takes place on Saturday, September 11 in the main sanctuary of DBC. You just don't want to miss this fun and very "girlie" event. It begins at 10:30 with viewing of the beautifully decorated tables. The delicious, catered lunch will be served at 11:00. You will hear about all the programs available to women during the upcoming year, and be inspired by our speakers, Roseanne Elling, Ph.D., and Lara Amis, Stylist. There is no cost for this luncheon - the event is a gift to you. Bring a friend. Call Patti McNeme to sign up, 972-644-6263, or email at sweetpea07@tx.rr.com.
Dining Divas
September 21 and 23 will be Dining Divas again! Dining Divas has been described as "accelerated friendship making." It's an opportunity to dine with a small group of up to seven other women in a hostess' home, on either Tuesday or Thursday of the third week of every other month at 7:00 pm. There are opportunities to sign up for either of those days, for a simple evening meal prepared by the hostess. The groupings continually change over the months so that you have the opportunity to broaden the number of ladies you are acquainted with at DBC, and all this is within the comfortable setting of someone's home. At Dining Divas there is no agenda, no projects to sign up on a committee - just friendly fellowship with real women like you. So please come and be blessed, and be a blessing to others as we get to know one another on a more intimate level.
Please contact Patti McNeme at sweetpea07@tx.rr.com for more information or any questions.

CELEBRATING MISSIONS!
As one of the missionary families being blessed by DBC's support, THANK YOU for all your effort! Please communicate our thanks to the church. We are so grateful to you and others who have contributed time, energy, effort, and possessions to minister to us and those we serve by being here in Thailand. Please communicate our thanks to the church. Our ministries support and strengthen other missionaries in Asia to continue to serve and stay on the field and in the ministry that the Lord gave them. They serve in so many different ways--church planters, teachers, orphan care, community outreach, backpacking ministry... the list is long and varied but at the core is the goal--that Jesus Christ and the salvation that He offers would be known and the Body of Christ in Asia would grow and be strengthened.

Please know we appreciate you and our friends at DBC so much! You encourage us with your prayers and support. We will continue to pray for all of you--that you would be blessed, see the richness of the life He offers alive and well at DBC, and continue to share the Gospel at home and overseas.
Blessings, Brandon and Cheri Boyd

These are difficult days in our world's history. 1.75 billion people are desperately poor, natural disasters are gouging entire nations, and economic uncertainty still reigns across the globe. But you and I have been given an opportunity to make a big difference. What if we did? What if we rocked the world with hope? Infiltrated all corners with God's love and life? We are created by a great God to do great works. He invites us to outlive our lives, not just in heaven, but here on earth. Let's live our lives in such a way that the world will be glad we did.
