Second Sunday of Advent - Jesus as High Priest

December 04, 2011
Pastor Hal
Matthew 1.21

Sermon Notes

1.    Jesus is our high priest because He knows us, He is like us, and He made propitiation for our sins (Hebrews 2.17, 18; 4.14-16).

2.    Jesus is our high priest, He understands us, and He is after the order of Melchizedek (Hebrew 5.1-10).

3.    Jesus is our high priest because He is eternal, His sacrifice is eternal, and His prayers for us are effective (Hebrews 7.23-28).

4.    Jesus is our eternal high priest because He entered the true tabernacle in heaven (Hebrews 8.1, 2; see also Luke 22.45 and Matthew 27.50, 51).

5.    Jesus Christ is our eternal high priest because He was a perfect sacrifice
(Hebrews 9-14).

6.    With Jesus as our high priest, our lives are changed forever, and we change the way we live (Hebrews 10.19-25).

Remembering and Applying these Truths at Christmas

1.    There is nothing we could do to earn forgiveness. We cannot be good enough.
2.    Jesus came as a baby to be our priest, He lived a perfect life to be our priest, He died on the cross for our sin as our priest for our sin, and He rose from the dead to live and pray for us as our high priest.
3.    He is there for us – He calls us to draw near with confidence to receive mercy and find grace in time of need. We are not alone. We are never alone.
4.    We live now as a kingdom of priests for Him and for each other (1 Peter 2.5) with all the saints of the ages (Hebrews 12.1).
