PAUL AND SHARON TOWNSEND

Wycliffe Bible Translators

Paul & Sharon Townsend work to provide the Cotzal Ixil people of Guatemala (ca. 18,000) with God's Word in their own language and the ability to read and use it. The Cotzal Ixil New Testament was dedicated in 2001, followed by 3½ years of intense Bible teaching, teacher training and literacy.

Although Townsends are temporarily based in Idaho to care for elderly relatives, work continues on Old Testament portions, Bible study guides, teacher training and Bible classes through Josue, an Ixil translator, via email and Paul's trips back to Guatemala. A Bible Teachers Association has formed of volunteers who teach daily classes using the New Testament and recorded Ixil Scripture is broadcast on local radio.

With the sudden death of a fellow Bible translator in July 2006, Paul has been given the task of completing that work, a New Testament for the Chajul Ixil people (ca. 22,000), a related language in nearby villages. This will take another 4 or 5 years.

May God give strength, protection, grace and wisdom to complete the task of giving ALL the Ixil people of Guatemala His Word in their heart language.
