Elijah and the Chariot and Horses of Fire
Sermon Notes
Elijah (a review):
1. Knew the reality of God – He is alive!
2. Believed that he was a personal representative of God.
3. Lived with divine resources at his disposal.
4. Walked by faith and not by sight.
5. Separated himself from the evil around him.
6. Lived with an eternal perspective.
7. Was a mighty man of prayer.
8. Exhibited incredible spiritual boldness.
9. He was a man with the same nature as our nature.
10. Had a supernatural exit from this world.
Notice their geographical progression:
Elijah: Gilgal – Bethel – Jericho – Jordan
Elisha: Jordan – Jericho – Bethel – Mt. Carmel – Samaria
Why did God take him this way?
How does his exit speak to me?
Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire (Hebrews 12.28-29).
• We are called to live with a sense of awe and reverence. God wants to purify our lives our lives with Himself. The way Elijah went to heaven was in itself a call to Elisha to live a life cleansed by the fire of God – a heavenly vision of the greatness of God – the purity of God – the righteousness of God – the holiness of God.
• Do we live with a vision of the fire and holiness of God?
• Do we live with the joy of seeing Him face to face?
• Do we live with a desire to herald His message?
• Do we live with a desire to make disciples and encourage them?
Elijah stands as an example to us in our day – to be bold and compassionate prophets to our generation, calling God’s people back to Him, to live a life of single-minded devotion to Christ, and make disciples so that God’s purposes will keep moving forward.
