Captured By the Holy Spirit, the Church Communicates the Mighty Acts of God and Exalts Jesus as Lord and Christ

September 19, 2010
Pastor Hal
Acts 2

Sermon Notes

1. The Spirit empowers the church to communicate the mighty acts of God to people from all over the world.
2. The Spirit empowers the church to preach the mighty acts of God in Christ to people from all over the world.
       Note the characteristics of Christ:
          • Jesus the Nazarene
          • Attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him
          • Delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God
          • You nailed to a cross
          • But God raised Him up

3. The Spirit makes the Word of God come alive.
          • Joel 2
          • Psalms 16 and 110
          • Peter is full of Scripture

4. Through the power of the Spirit Peter proclaims Jesus as “Lord and Christ” (v.36).
5. Through the power of the Spirit three thousand were saved that first day (v.41).
6. Through the power of the Spirit the church is totally united behind the message, and God blesses it.
         • The young church is hungry for God’s Word
         • The young church is hungry for being with God’s people
         • The young church is hungry for worship (breaking bread and prayer)
         • The young church is hungry for evangelism

So what?

1. We want to be full of the Holy Spirit – let’s cultivate an attitude of perpetual emptiness so that we might live with perpetual fullness.
2. Does the fire of the presence of God capture us and fill us?
3. Like Peter (and the early church), are we full of Scripture?
4. Are the traits of the early church traits of today’s church?
5. Do we celebrate conversions and spiritual growth?
6. Remember that the church is not a building – rather it is LIFE!
